Robert Clay

Dec. 18, 1992– Feb. 22, 2020

Robert Nathaniel “Nate” Clay, 27, passed away on Feb. 22, 2020, in Clearwater, Florida.

Nate was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on Dec. 18, 1992, the oldest son of Angela Foutz Clay and the late Robert Alton Clay.

Nate leaves behind his two beloved siblings, Nicholas Alton Clay and Riley Elizabeth Clay. In addition, Nate is survived by his paternal grandparents, Robert C. and Ann Riley Clay, of Ashland, Kentucky, and his maternal grandmother, Nancy McGlothlin, of Roanoke, Virginia. He also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends who will miss him dearly.

Nate grew up in Huntington, West Virginia, where he excelled in many sports, his favorites being baseball, basketball and football.

At the age of 15, he moved with his family to Hurricane, West Virginia, where he was a high school standout baseball player and pitcher. Upon graduation in 2011, Nate committed to The Ohio State University to continue his passion for the sport. He later transferred to Marshall University his sophomore year to complete his college education.

While Nate had an undeniable love for sports, including his favorite teams, the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Lakers, the love he had for his family was unparalleled. He truly enjoyed his roles as a son, brother, grandson and cousin.

Through all of Nate’s life experiences, he found his faith in God and love for family to be the most important sources of comfort and support. Nate’s kind nature and big heart will forever be in our thoughts.

A celebration of life memorial service will be noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, Russell, located at 901 Ashland Drive, Russell, Kentucky. Visitation will occur at 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service. The family invites everyone to join them in the church fellowship hall from 1–3 p.m.

Gail Phillips

March 23, 1936 – Feb. 20, 2020

Mrs. Gail Arthur Phillips, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, in Bluffton, South Carolina. She was 83 years old.

Gail was born to Daisy and Allen Arthur on March 23, 1936 in Ironton, where she was raised.

She leaves behind her loving husband of 63 years, Robert “Bob” Wesley Phillips, her life-long sweetheart whom she met in the sandbox when she was five years old.

After supporting Bob through his PhD, which resulted in several moves to locations including Bloomington, Indiana, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, they ultimately settled in Richmond, Virginia where they lived happily for 26 years and raised their family. Gail was employed for 20 years by The Life of Virginia, which later became Aon Advisors.

After many summers of vacationing in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Bob and Gail decided to retire to the area, where they have remained for the last 20 years.

Gail is predeceased by her son, Todd Allen Phillips, and is survived by her daughter, Page E. Phillips O’Connor, and grandchildren, Todd “TJ” Phillips, Kaela O’Connor and Trever Phillips, who were the center of her world. She is also survived by her first cousin, Jean Davidson Staley, who was more like an older sister to her, as they grew up directly next door to one another in Ironton.

Gail will be remembered fondly for her raucous sense of humor, boisterous laugh, use of not-so-polite words, grandkid gift scavenger hunts, never-ending supply of gummy bears and her famous mac and cheese.

We would like to thank the staff at Bloom at Belfair, and Tidewater Hospice for their loving and attentive care these last few months.

The family is planning to hold a memorial for Gail in Ironton, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to the Coach T-Philly Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was founded to honor Todd Phillips, beloved son, teacher and coach.

Lindsey Reed

Lindsey Thomas Reed, 69, of South Point, died Sunday, March 1, 2020, at King’s Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Kentucky.

Funeral service will be held at noon Thursday at Schneider-Hall Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Burial will follow in Burlington Greenlawn Cemetery, Burlington. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Eileen Unger

Jan. 9, 1926– Feb. 27, 2020

Eileen Unger, 94, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, at Community Hospice of Ashland.

She was born Jan. 9, 1926 in Ironton, the daughter of the late Fred and Mayme Scherer.

She married the love of her life, Leo Unger, in 1948. He preceded her in death in 2016. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jim, in 2016.

Eileen was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church serving in the choir, member of the Catholic Women’s club and parish council. In 1983, she retired from the C&O railroad.

She spoiled her grandchildren with love and was always available when needed. She was an animal lover, avid card player, frequent traveler and could prepare a meal for 12 in under an hour. She never let anyone leave her home empty-handed.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Mark) Decker, sons, Tom (Pat) Unger, Mark (Pat) Unger, John Unger and Paul (Susan) Unger. Eileen had 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by a sister, Sr. Wanda Scherer; niece, Patty (Tom) Miller; and nephews, Jerry (Betty) Scherer and Tom (Mary) Smith.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Catherine Smith; brother, Wilfred “Bud” Scherer;  and nephews, Bob Smith and Jim Scherer.

The family would like to recognize and give a special thanks to the staff at Oakmont Manor, Morning Pointe and Community Hospice for their loving care of Eileen.

Visitation will be 6–8 p.m. Friday at O’Keefe- Baker Funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Fr. David Huffman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Catholic Community Parish Life Center, P.O. Box 499, Ironton, Ohio.

Paul Bias

Paul Gregory Bias, 52, of Proctorville, died on March 2, 2020, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, with the Rev. John Arnold and his uncle, Robert Bias, officiating. Burial will follow in Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller. Visitation will be held from 12–2 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory on Wednesday.
