On Thursday afternoon, the Ironton Fire Department was called out to battle a house fire at 2807 S. Fifth St.

Ironton Fire Department Chief Mike Mahlmeister said the call was that it was a kitchen fire, but as firefighters approached the house they could see heavy smoke and made an “all call” for more firefighters to come to the scene.

“The whole back of the house was well involved and I got on scene and helped lay a line to get water to the truck from the hydrant up the street by the old Tribune building,” he said. “The roof started to cave in and we pulled all the firefighters out and took safety measures.”

Mahlmeister said he assumed that the fire started in a wall and went straight up to the attic space.

“And once that happens, it becomes tough to get the fire out,” he said. “We are trying to protect the houses on either side and we’ve done a good job of that. We are trying to minimize damage and make sure everyone is safe.”

No one was injured during the fire.
