Ironton wins in final seconds on Hankins’ FTs

CHESAPEAKE — Maybe the recent freezing temperatures left ice water in Lola Hankins’ veins.

Ironton was trailing by one point with time running out when Hankins was fouled taking a jump shot.

Hankins made both free throws with five seconds to play that gave the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers a 39-38 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Chesapeake Lady Panthers on Monday.

After a first quarter that ended in an 8-8 tie, Chesapeake led most of the game until Ironton rallied in the fourth quarter for the win.

Chesapeake (11-9, 5-8) went up 24-17 at the half as Kate Ball and Abbey Isaacs each scored 8 points in the second quarter.

Lexi McCall and Peyton Deer combined for 7 of Ironton’s 9 points.

The Lady Fighting Tigers cut the deficit to 27-24 in the third quarter as Hankins scored 5 points and Emerson White 2.

Erin Hicks’ 3-pointer was the only Chesapeake points.

The comeback continued in the fourth quarter as Deer hit a pair of 3-pointers and White had 4 points to set up Hankins 2 clutch free throws.

Ball hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points for the Lady Panthers.

Ironton (9-11, 5-7) had a balanced attack as Hankins scored 10 with Deer and White getting 9 each and McCall 7.

Ball led all scorers with 18 points and Isaacs scored 12.
