I-64 slip causes traffic detours

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. — The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 at Catlettsburg were closed Monday morning due to an embankment failure. A detour will be in operation while repairs take place.

The interstate is closed just west of Exit 191, the Catlettsburg exit. While eastbound traffic is unaffected, all westbound through traffic is being detoured to exit 191 at Catlettsburg to U.S. 23 north to U.S. 60 west to I-64 at Cannonsburg until further notice. Detour signs are in place.

Crews are continuing construction of a “crossover” to connect I-64’s westbound lanes to the eastbound side. Once finished, two-way traffic will be established on eastbound I-64 so travelers can safely pass the slide area.

Contractors have been working since August to stabilize the slide — part of a $20.1 million project that includes repairs at two other slide areas, general roadway and bridge work, and resurfacing eight miles of the highway from the Big Sandy River bridge to just east of Coalton.

 
W.Va. high court in Huntington today

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Supreme Court is going on the road.

The justices plan to hear arguments in several cases Tuesday in Huntington. Proceedings are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center.

Chief Justice Brent Benjamin will moderate a panel discussion, “Blogging and the Potential Limits of the First Amendment,” at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the arts center.

Woman sentenced for embezzlement

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Huntington woman has been sentenced to three years and a month in federal prison for embezzling $1.1 million from her company’s clients.

Andrea Mills formerly owned Allied Benefit Administrators Inc., a third-party administrator of employee health-benefit claims.

The 49-year-old Mills admitted embezzling $1.1 million in premiums that her clients paid for reinsurance, payments that were to limit their exposure under the benefit plans they offered.

As a result of her actions, clients lost $2.3 million in health claims that should have been covered by reinsurance but weren’t.

Haunted theatre hosts casting call

ASHLAND, Ky. — Come and spend your Halloween terrifying the Tri-State with The Red Lion Theatre Company’s haunted theatre “The Royale!”

Auditions for scare-actors will be on Sunday, at 3:30 p.m. on the second floor of 1301 Winchester Ave. in Ashland, across from the Paramount.

Auditions are open to all ages and there are roles open for a number of actors and actresses within the haunt and also volunteers to be tour guides, scenic painters, make-up artists, etc., for this haunted attraction.

“The Royale” will be operating from 7:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. nightly on Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31.

Jonas Brothers concert movie showing Sunday

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is hosting a free showing of “Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience” at the Main Branch on Sunday, Sept. 27.

The film starts at 1:30 p.m. The Main Branch is located at 1740 Central Ave. Admission is free and some refreshments are provided. Additional snacks can be purchased.

Other upcoming movies at the Library include: “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” (Girls Night Out) on Sept. 30; “Lost Boys” on Oct 3; and “Monsters v. Aliens” on Oct. 10 (this one is at the Summit Branch).

Winter Guard auditions scheduled for October

Ashland Ky. — Rivertown Performing Arts League, Inc. will conduct auditions for the 2010 winter guard season on Oct. 4 and Oct. 11. 

Members are being sought for Z Winter Guard and Ability Winter Guard.  The auditions will be at Hatcher Elementary School in Ashland. 

Prospective members ages 12 to 22 are invited to audition for performance on flag, dance/ movement, sabre and rifle / air blade. No prior experience is necessary.  Members of all ability levels are welcome.
