Sammy Birchfield

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Sammy Andrew Birchfield, 67, of Fayetteville, formerly of Pedro, passed away Friday, March 11, 2011, at Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough, N.C. He was born Aug. 17, 1943, in Hugheston, W.Va., the son of the late Alex and Myrtie Young Birchfield. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Ann Layne Birchfield, whom he married on Nov. 16, 1968.

Mr. Birchfield was a 1962 graduate of Rutland High School. Sammy was a retired employee of the City of Fayetteville, a former employee of the Rock Hill School District, a former volunteer fireman for the Decatur Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was owner of “Santa on Call” serving as one of Santa’s helpers.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Birchfield, his in-laws, John and Faye Layne; and three brothers-in-law, Richard Layne, John Layne and Ron Harvey.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Robin (Kevin) Delawder of Coal Grove; Juli (William) Rauser of St. Pauls, N.C.; Noel (Todd) Taylor of Fayetteville, and Nicole (Jason) Leslie of Savannah, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, Christopher Delawder, Samantha (Travis) Wheeler, Jordan Delawder, Taylor Delawder, Noah Delawder, David Rauser, Tariesa Rauser, Heather Smith, Garen Taylor, Evan Taylor, Savannah Leslie and Xander Leslie; two great-granddaughters, Irah Delawder and Autumn Wheeler, a brother, Roy Young; three sisters, Bessie (Jewel) Withrow, Charlotte (Everett) Grant and Dreama Harvey; a brother-in-law, Terry Layne; two sisters-in-law, Brenda (Terry) Craft and Janie Birchfield; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Fayetteville Church of the Nazarene and visitation was from 5:30 p.m. until the time of service with Rev. Mark Medley officiating. A memorial service was at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the South Point Church of the Nazarene and visitation was from 1:30 p.m. until time of service.
