They were married April 29, 1961 in Ironton by the Rev. Isom Gibson.

They are the parents of five children, Julie Hall and her husband, George, of Ironton, Carla Miller and Randy Akers of Ironton, Tammy Maynard of South Point, Donald Bowman of South Point, Vernon Bowman Jr., and his wife, Sheila of Coal Grove and a former son-in-law, Ronald Miller of Chesapeake. They also have 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bowman is the former Reba Backus.
