Helen Roche

Helen “Leni” Roche, 77, passed away Monday Jan. 16, 2012, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. Helen was born on April 13, 1934, in Astoria, N.Y., to the late Charles and Antonia Gestal. She is survived by her two sisters, Rosalie (Ronnie) Stalker of Bayville, N.Y. and Theresa (George) Peters of Englewood, N. J.
Leni, a 1955 graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor of science degree in biology, was also a sorority member of Alpha Delta Pi. On April 28, 1956, Leni married Thomas Roche, a retired veteran who passed in June 2010. In order to maintain the military lifestyle they lived in many places raising a family of seven children. They resided in New York, Maine, Louisiana, Germany, and Virginia, before settling on a farm in Willow Wood. Leni, a stay at home mom for many years, worked beside her husband in order to maintain their farm. She volunteered for many years, 22 years as a Symmes Valley Boosters and 25 years in 4-H. She was also a member of the Lawrence County Homemakers Association as well as St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Ironton.
Leni is survived by her seven children, Mike Roche of Willow Wood, Cindy Olari of Columbus, Jacquie (John) Schmittauer of Delaware, Ohio, Maria (Ernie) Brumfield of South Point, Chuck (Jackie) Roche of Willow Wood, Pam Noble of South Point and Ed Roche of Chillicothe. Her grandchildren include Amy Schmittauer, USN Airman Alisha Roche, Kari Peterson, Nicole Olari, Daniel Roche, Heath Bridges, Andrew Davis, C.J. Noble, Tommy Noble, Brandon Noble, Johnny Schmittauer, Jimmy Schmittauer, Melanie Noble, Sammy Jo Roche and two great-grandchildren Kelly Schmittauer and Kaden Peterson.
Visiting hours will be from 6-9 p.m.Wednesday  at O’Keefe & Baker Funeral Home.  Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, 611 Center Street in Ironton, Ohio.

Joyce Brandt
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Joyce Marie Brandt, 73, of Huntington, died Friday, Jan.13, 2012, at her residence. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at River Cities Community Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville, Ohio.

Rick Whitt
Rick Carl Witt, Jr., 43, of Ironton died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 at his residence. Arrangements are under the direction of Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home and will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

Joseph Martin
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Joseph B. “Freddie” Martin, 79, of Huntington, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at his residence. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville with minister Brad Poe officiating. Burial will follow in Miller Memorial Gardens. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW 9738 of Guyandotte. Visitation will be noon-1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Wilbert Hord

Wilbert “Butch” Hord, 62, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at his residence.  He was born June 30, 1949 in Ironton to the late Eugene and Lillie (Boykin) Hord.
Butch was a graduate of Ironton High School.  He went on to complete welding school in Lancaster where he became a Master Welder. He received his automotive certification and he also  received an associate’s degree from Ohio University in psychology and arts.  In 1993, Butch become a member of New Jerusalem Church.
In addition to his parents Butch was preceded in death by two brothers, infant, Eugene Hord and Kelvin Hord; and a stepson, David Yates.
Butch is survived by one daughter, Meaka Carter of Ashland, Ky.; one son, Wilbert Millhouse of Ironton; two sisters, Retina Gayle and Denise Pringle, both of Ashland; a brother, Calvin Carter of Ironton; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and his wife Tammi White.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the New Jerusalem Christian in Ironton, with Bishop Kenneth Lisath officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to the time of service on Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of  the Tracy Brammer – Monroe Funeral Home.

Harvey Carter

ASHLAND, Ky.— Harvey C. Carter, 81, of Ashland, went home to be with the Lord Sunday Jan. 15, 2012, from Community Hospice Care Center after a long illness.

He was born March 28, 1930, in Lawrence County, Ky., the son of the late Bascom and Dora Spillman Carter of Louisa.

He was a retired control operator for Allied Chemical in South Point and the Tar Plant in Ironton. He attended Sheridan Freewill Baptist Church in Sheridan, Ohio and was a veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Garnet Holland and Vonda Pigg.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma F. VanHorn Carter; five children, Pamela (Jack) Stevens of Castalian Springs, Tenn., Donna (Ray) Day of Proctorville, Ohio, Debra (Rick) Strasser of Dover, Del., Rick (Tammy) Carter of Waynesville, Ohio, and Kimberly (Brian) Mitchell of Powell; two sisters, Wilda (Fayetta) Bush of Louisa, and Dorothy (widow of late Jim) Preston of Louisa; one brother, Morton (Hazel) Carter of Waterford, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Daniel Stevens, Kathleen Jones, Richard Strasser III, Nicholas Strasser, Kristen Kempf, Jessica Salyers, Nathaniel Mitchell and Karissa Mitchell; seven great grandchildren, Jackson Stevens, Emma Lee Stevens, Alex Kempf, Andy Kempf, Ayla Kempf, Katelyn Salyers and Benjamin Salyers; and a multitude of friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point, with military graveside rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93. Kevin Thacker

SOUTH POINT — Kevin Thacker, 56, of South Point, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home.

 

Jack Reed

Jack Kendall Reed, 48, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at a local health care center. The Ironton native was born March 18, 1963, the son of the late Leslie Harold and Ledra Ruth Pruden Reed.

Jack was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran. He received a degree in real estate from Ohio University Southern. He was a former truck driver for Expo Trucking and the BWC Trucking Company in Hanging Rock. He was a member of the American Legion and loved horseback riding. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Lee Reed.

He is survived by two daughters, Samantha Suttle and Juanita Reed, both of South Point; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Keith and Pam Reed of Columbus, and Jeff and Mary Reed of Oregon, Larry and Brenda Reed of Pedro, and Tim and Missy Reed of Ironton; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Kyle and Oscar Owens, Linda and Kenny Joseph all of Ironton, Sherry and Dennis Hankins of Kitts Hill, and Terri and Rod Abrams of Pedro; grandchildren, Alexia, Mikey, Faith, and Draven; two special friends, Brian DeLong of Columbus, and Randy Kehrig of Greenup, Ky.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with Bro. Sam Cooke officiating. Burial will follow in Bald Knob Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4338 13th Street, Ashland, KY 41101.
