Balanced Herd beats Southern Miss; Ohio wins

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Dennis Tinnon led five Marshall players in double figures with 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Thundering Herd beat Southern Mississippi 79-75 on Saturday.

DeAndre Kane had 17, Damier Pitts and Shaquille Johnson recorded 13, and Dago Pena added 10 for Marshall (18-12, 9-7 Conference USA).

All five of Marshall’s starters grabbed at least four rebounds to help the Thundering Herd win the battle of the boards 44-36.

The Golden Eagles trailed throughout the first half but clawed back to take a 62-61 lead with 4:50 left to play behind a Darnell Dodson 3-pointer.

The Thundering Herd, however, used a 12-3 run to regain the lead, 73-65, with 1:02 remaining. Marshall made eight free throws while Southern Mississippi (24-7, 11-5) connected on just 3 of 6 free throw attempts and went 0 of 4 from the field during the run.

Jonathan Mills led Southern Mississippi with 17.

Ohio 63, Miami (Ohio) 54

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — D.J. Cooper scored 14 points and broke Ohio’s all-time assists mark and Jon Smith had a career-high 13 points as the Bobcats defeated Miami (Ohio) 63-54 Saturday and locked up at least a bye in the Mid-American Conference tournament.

Cooper also had five steals, four rebounds and four assists for Ohio (24-7, 11-5), breaking Dennis Whitaker’s mark of 651 assists that has stood since 1980. Cooper now has 654.

Trailing 4-3, the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run capped by Ricardo Johnson’s jumper to pull ahead for good.

Ohio led by 12 in the first half and 28-24 at the break. The Bobcats again built a 12-point lead, which the RedHawks (9-20, 5-11) whittled to 52-48 with 2:22 remaining. Ohio then hit 11 of 12 free throws, with Cooper making 5 of 6.

Brian Sullivan’s 11 points led Miami, which also lost to Ohio 69-65 on Jan. 21.
