It was all about the defense for the St. Joseph Female Flyers.

Using a strong defensive effort throughout the game, the Female Flyers downed the Fairview (Ky.) Lady Eagles 44-30 on Monday.

“We played well offensively in the first half, but we played well defensively the whole game. When you hold a team to 30 points it’s a good effort,” said Female Flyers’ coach Nick Miller.

The offense made a good contribution led by Amber Neal who scored 20 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and had 2 steals.

Hannah Miller had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Hannah Martin grabbed 9 rebounds and Molly Miller had 3 steals and 2 assists.

“Amber stepped up for us and Hannah Martin did a nice job,” said coach Miller.

St. Joseph is now 4-0 and hosts Portsmouth Notre Dame at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in a key game.

“We’re happy to be 4-0, but we know that Notre Dame is one of the better teams in the area, regardless of division. This will be a big game for our girls,” said Miller.

Hannah Miller scored 8 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 13-6 lead.

Neal scored 6 and Hannah Miller 4 as the Female Flyers built a 23-12 halftime elad.

Martin’s 4 points helped St. Joseph go up 31-12 with 3:30 left in the third quarter, but the Female Flyers didn’t score again until five minutes were left in the game. Fairview used the span to go on a 13-0 run and get within 31-25.

St. Joseph recovered as Hannah Miller scored to end the drought and Neal scored 9 straight points including 6-of-6 at the line.

“We took some bad shots during that stretch and turned the ball over a few times. We got a little impatient,” said coach Miller.
