Flyers get win in OT

PEDRO — In order to win this game, the St. Joseph Flyers were going to need some big plays.

They got them.

The Flyers got some key points from Justin Mahlmeister, Hunter Pemberton and Joseph Payton as they outlasted the Rock Hill Redmen 61-57 in overtime Saturday.

“Justin hit two big shots back-to-back and the young guys stepped up,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

The Flyers were down by seven points with less than two minutes to play despite 7 points by Payton and 6 from Eli Lewis in the quarter.

Mahlmeister made a basket and then drained a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to tie the game and force the overtime.

Mahlmeister scored 5 points in overtime and Pemberton hit a key 3-pointer that gave the Flyers the lead for good as they escaped with the win.

Troy Scott and Mahlmeister had 6 points each in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 14-9 lead.

Evan Morris scored 7 points in the second quarter and the Redmen rallied to take a 25-20 lead at the break.

Austin Collins and Morris scored 6 points each in the third quarter as the lead grew as much as 10 points and it was 37-30 at the end of the stanza setting up the exciting fourth quarter and overtime.

The Flyers (2-3) were led by Mahlmeister with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals and 4 blocked shots. Scott scored 14 points and Lewis had 14 points and 5 rebounds.

Rock Hill (1-4) had three players in double figures as Collins scored 16, Morris 13 and Laden Delawder 10. Morris also had 6 rebounds.
