RACINE — The Symmes Valley Vikings won the battle but lost the war.

The Vikings dominated the stat sheet but couldn’t convert their yardage into touchdowns as they lost 14-6 to the Racine Southern Tornadoes Friday.

Symmes Valley (3-2) had 294 total yards including 56 carries for 250 yards on the ground. Southern had 185 total yards with 165 coming on the ground.

The Vikings ran 65 plays to just 32 for the Tornadoes including a mere 13 plays in the first half. They held the ball for 32 minutes.

Southern — now 5-0 for the first time in school history — used a kickoff return by Zac Beegle to the Vikings’ 37 to get started.

Tyler Barton ran 28 yards on first down and then went the final 9 yards for the score. Trenton Deem’s conversion kick made it 7-0 at the 11:21 mark.

The Vikings put together an 86-yard, 16-play drive capped by Tanner Mays’ 4-yard touchdown run with 10:47 left in the half. The conversion failed and they trailed 7-6.

The Vikings’ Kyle Vallance intercepted a pass with 3:25 left in the half deep in their own territory. Tyler Rowe ran 18 yards for an apparent touchdown on the 10th play of the Symmes Valley drive, but a holding call nullified the score and the drive stalled.

Symmes Valley had the ball for almost 10 minutes of the third quarter as the Tornadoes ran just three plays in the period.

After receiving a punt to begin the fourth quarter, the Tornadoes used a fake punt to keep their drive alive and set up a 3-yard scoring run by Tristen Wolfe with 6:34 to play and it was 14-6.

The Vikings started another drive but Southern’s Colten Walters intercepted a pass with 1:15 left to stop the scoring threat.

Rowe led the Vikings with 71 yards on 15 carries and Mays had 74 yards on 18 attempts. Collin Webb added 70 yards on 15 tries and Brandon Craft had 42 yards on eight attempts.

Mays was 3 of 7 passing for 39 yards.

Ryan Billingsley ran six times for 44 yards to lead the Tornadoes.
