SOUTH POINT — Until the offense got going, the South Point Lady Pointers used their defense to keep the Chesapeake Lady Panthers’ offense from getting started.

South Point used a strong defensive effort in the first half to build a 12-point lead and the Lady Pointers beat the Lady Panthers 50-37 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Lady Pointers led just 9-4 after the first quarter, but the offense scored 15 points in the second quarter and held Chesapeake to 8.

“We played pretty good in the first half. We didn’t play very well in the third quarter,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

“We played pretty good defensively most of the game. We did the same thing in the second half we did in the first half, but they started hitting their shots in the third quarter.”

South Point is now 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the OVC. Chesapeake is 5-3 and 0-2.

“Chesapeake has a good team. They always pay us tough. It was good to get a win,” said Adams.

Abbey Winkler scored 13 points to lead a balanced South Point offense. Brianna Bacon had 12 points while Brett Justice and Brooklyn Badgett had 11 points each.

Kaylee Curry scored 14 for Chesapeake.

Winkler and Badgett combined for South Point’s total in the first quarter.

Winkler and Justice each hit 3-pointers in the second quarter as South Point built a 24-12 halftime lead.

Tia Spaulding, Sydnee Hall and Curry scored 4 points each in the third quarter as Chesapeake cut the deficit to 31-27.

But Bacon scored 6 points and Badgett 5 as South Point began to pull away.
