SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers must have felt like they were on a rollercoaster. Fortunately, it was a good ride.

The Pointers gave an up-and-down performance but had enough on the “up” side to beat the Fairland Dragons 6-2 on Thursday in a soccer game.

South Point jumped in front 3-0 before the Dragons got within 3-2. The Pointers then finished with three straight goals to even their record at 5-5-2.

“We started strong and then Fairland started playing well. Fairland is playing well for a second-year program,” said Pointers’ coach Zane Joy. “Finally, we got it back together and finished well.”

Jordan Overstreet scored two straight goals —the first on an assist from Jake Helton — to put the Pointers up 2-0 at the 17:00 mark. Merrick Harris got an assist from Helton two minutes later and it was 3-0.

Wyatt Morris scored an unassisted goal at the 30:00 mark for Fairland and teammate Alex Naegele scored one minute into the second half and the Dragons were down 3-2.

But Drew Smith gave the Pointers some breathing room with a goal at the 63:00 mark with an assist from Harris and it was 4-2.

Helton then capped a stellar game with a pair of unassisted goals.

Goalie Eli Lucas had 5 saves for the Pointers while Alex Ward saved 12 for the Dragons.

South Point visits Ironton St. Joseph at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday.

In the girls’ game, South Point beat Fairland 4-1.
