This time there was some offense with the defense.

The Symmes Valley Vikings have played well defensively the past several weeks but had trouble scoring which resulted in very few wins.

That changed Saturday night as the Vikings put both aspects of the game together in a 65-36 win over the St. Joseph Flyers.

“We got off to a good start, especially defensively,” said Vikings’ coach Donnie Saunders. “Defensively we’ve been holding everybody down, we just had a trouble getting points ourselves.”

Collin Webb scored 16 points as three Vikings reached double figures. Chayden Renfroe scored 12 and Payton Hayes 11. Jarod Sheppard grabbed 10 rebounds and Shawn Belville seven.

Judge Williams and Tyler Walters scored 12 points each and Tyler Ward 10 points for the Flyers (4-14).

The Vikings’ defense went to work right away as they blanked the Flyers 10-0 in the first quarter.

Hayes hit a pair of 3-pointers and Webb scored four points as the Vikings extended the lead to 23-8 at the half. Williams and Ward made 3-pointers for the Flyers.

The scoring pace picked up in the third quarter as the Vikings outscored the Flyers 23-18 to take a 46-26.

Webb and Belville scored six points each for the Vikings. Ward had seven points, Williams six and Walters five for the Flyers.

Laken Gothard and Renfroe scored five points each in the fourth quarter as the Vikings outscored the Flyers 19-10.

The Vikings play Green at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the Division IV sectional tournament game at Meigs High School.

St. Joseph meets Federal Hocking at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the sectional tournament at Meigs.

In the reserve game, Symmes Valley beat St. Joseph to finish the season 20-1. The junior Vikings only loss was at Beaver Eastern in overtime whom they split their two games this year.

The junior Vikings were coached by Tyler Rowe and Kyle Meadows.
