CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers like a low-scoring, defensive game. They like it even better when they win.
The Lady Panthers had plenty to like on Monday as they edged the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 45-38 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“It was senior night and you want to win for your senior players. Defensively we were pretty good. Offensively, neither team was real good but the defenses had a lot to do with it,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.
Natalee Hall scored a game-high 19 points including 6-of-8 at the foul line for Chesapeake (14-7, 8-5). She also had three steals.
Dominique Murphy added nine points and four steals, Brooke Webb got 10 rebounds and seven assists and Jozy Jones had six rebounds.
Jones and Murphy were honored in senior night ceremonies.
“I really enjoy this team. We won 14 games and lost five seasons. To turn around and win 14 again with a young team is a testament to this group. It tells you what kind of girls we have in our program,” said Ball.
Lauren Crum had 15 points — she made three 3-pointers — to lead Coal Grove (11-9, 6-7). Emily Compliment added nine points.
“Crum did a great job of stepping up and knocking down some shots to keep us in the game,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“Compliment faced a box-and-one the whole night. We needed to do a better job of making our free throws.”
Coal Grove had a 10-9 first quarter lead as Crum hit a 3-pointer and scored five points. Hall and Jones combined for all of Chesapeake’s points.
Karli Davis scored on five of her points in the second quarter and the Chesapeake defense held Coal Grove to just two field goals and took a 20-14 halftime lead.
Bailee McKnight hit a 3-pointer as Coal Grove cut into the Chesapeake lead at the end of the third quarter, 25-21.
Compliment scored six points, Crum hit two 3-pointers and McKnight made another triple in the fourth quarter, but Chesapeake countered with Murphy scoring six points and Hall 11 points including 3-of-3 at the foul line.
Webb added a three-point play in the quarter for the Lady Panthers.
On Thursday, Coal Grove hosts Ironton and Chesapeake visits Fairland
