PROCTORVILLE — Sometimes coach Jon Buchanan is easy to please. Then there are those other times…
Buchanan was split in his praise of his Fairland Lady Dragons after an 86-38 romp over the Gallipolis Blue Angels in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
“We played offense better,” said Buchanan. “I wasn’t too pleased with how we guarded in the first half.”
Fairland is now 18-2 overall and tied with Ironton for the OVC lead. The Lady Dragons need a win against Chesapeake on Thursday to clinch at least a share of the title. A win and an Ironton loss would give them the title outright.
All 14 players for Fairland scored en route to the easy win.
“We were doing a good job moving the basketball and taking what the defense was giving us. On defense our pressure got to them. We wanted the pace to be quick and move the ball up and down the floor and we did that,” said Buchanan.
Emily Chapman hit five 3-pointers to lead Fairland with 15 points. Taylar Wilson was right behind with 14 points and Jackie Wagner added 10.
Hunter Copley scored 14 points for Gallipolis (8-12, 3-9).
Chapman hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Allie Marshall scored all five of her points as Fairland raced to a 24-9 lead.
Wilson scored eight points and Morgan Fridley got seven as Fairland outscored Gallipolis 27-13 in the second quarter to build a 51-22 halftime cushion.
Copley scored six points in the second quarter.
Britney Thompson came off the bench to score all seven of her points in the fourth quarter for Fairland.
Fairland hosts Chesapeake on Thursday. Gallipolis hosts South Point on Wednesday and Portsmouth on Thursday.
