Former Fairland runner Ashton shines at Mid-South Conference indoor meet

Columbus — Shawnee State indoor track and field competed at the inaugural Mid-South Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon, held at Capital University.
The Shawnee State men would finish fourth overall as Lindsey Wilson took home the MSC championship on the men’s side. Seth Farmer was Shawnee State’s best performer on the day, winning both the 800 meter run (1:59.71) and the one-mile run (4:25.11).
AJ Barber would also bring home gold for the Bears, winning the 600 meter run with a time of 1:25.38. Caleb Kennelly would finish second in the pole vault, jumping a height of 3.90 meters.
Shawnee State’s women would also finish fourth overall as Lindsey Wilson brought home a sweep of the conference championships.
Anna Havranek would have Shawnee State’s best individual finish, placing first in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:21.70, nearly two minutes better than the second place finisher.
Havranek would also finish second in the 1000 meter run, an event won by fellow Bear Megan Ashton with a time of 3:14.50. Ashton — who ran at Fairland — would get a first place finish in the one mile run with a time of 5:26.08, and Alyssa Taylor won the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:17.28.
The Shawnee State 4×800 meter relay team would also finish first overall, with the team of Brooke Smith, Alyssa Taylor, Lindsey Krause and Ashley Hackworth finishing with a time of 9:51.52.
On Thursday, the Mid-South Conference announced academic award winners for the Mid-South Conference.
Ashton, Havranek, Smith and Kate Spencer were all named All-Academic for the women’s team, while the men pulled in eight awards as Mark Scout, Andrew Polanco, Ethan Richter, Adrian Ross, Cody Redman, David Jaeger, former Fairland runner Chad McComas, and Caleb Kennelly were all honored.
Shawnee State indoor track and field will now look ahead to the NAIA National Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee, scheduled for March 2-4.
