PEDRO — As Jerry Lee Lewis might say, “There was a whole lotta scoring goin’ on.”

The Rock Hill Redmen built a 35-point lead and then held on to outlast the Gallipolis Blue Devils 56-54 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.

Rock Hill (3-5, 2-3) led 49-14 after the third quarter and a 42-yard scoring run by Zak Adkins had the lead at 56-27 with just 5:09 to play.

The Redmen sent in their second unit but the Blue Devils continued with the first team offense and gained 280 yards and scored four touchdowns against the backups.

Rock Hill had 444 yards rushing on 61 carries led by Adkins with 192 yards on 15 attempts and Cameron Barnette with 190 yards on 29 rushes. Logan Hankins added 38 yards on four tries.

Brayden Friend was 1-of-2 passing for 36 yards to Jaret Bacorn as the Redmen had 480 total yards.

Gallipolis (3-5, 2-3) ran 20 times for 148 yards with quarterback Justin McClelland getting 88 yards on 13 tries. Boo Pulins had 61 yards on 11 carries.

McCelland was 24-of-38 passing for 472 yards and an interception. Caleb Henry caught seven passes for 126 yards, Garrett Burns six for 116 and James Armstrong two for 106.

Gallipolis scored first on a 9-yard run by McClelland who then threw to Armstrong for the conversion.

Rock Hill came back with a 58-yard, 10-play drive capped by Barnette’s 2-yard run — the first of his five touchdowns. Brady Floyd kicked the conversion.

After a Blue Devil punt, Rock Hill went 64 yards in 10 plays with Barnette running 7 yards for the score as Rock Hill took the lead with 11:17 to go in the half.

Gallipolis tied the game on a 2-yardd run by Pullins but Rock Hill took the lead for good as Barnette had touchdown runs of 4 and one yards and it was 27-14 at the half.

The Redmen dominated the third quarter as they outscored the Blue Devils 22-0.

Rock Hill used nine plays on the opening drive to go 67 yards with Adkins running the final 9 yards. Hankins caught the conversion pass.

Gallipolis failed to convert on fourth down at the Rock Hill 46 and Barnette scored on the next play for a 42-14 lead.

An interception by Friend gave Rock Hill the ball at its own 40 and Adkins went the distance on the first play to make it 49-14 with 4:51 on the clock.

McClelland had a 9-yard touchdown run and threw a screen pass to Pullins that went for 20 yards and a score and it was 49-27 with 7:05 left.

But Gallipolis was unable to stop Rock Hill’s first team offense the entire game and this time the Redmen went 70 yards in four plays with Adkins using a cutback move to run 42 yards for a touchdown with 5:09 left.

McClelland hit Burns with a 24-yard scoring pass at the 4:19 mark, then toss a flair pass to Armstrong who ran 95 yards for the touchdown with 2:03 left.

After a Rock Hill punt, the Blue Devils went 79 yards in three plays with the final 15 yards going to Henry for the score.

Gallipolis finally recovered one of its seven onside kickoffs at the Rock Hill 42 and with four seconds to play McClelland hit Burns with a 42-yar scoring pass. McClelland ran for the conversion.

Rock Hill recovered the onside kick to settle the outcome.

Next Friday, Rock Hill visits Chesapeake and Gallipolis hosts Ironton.
