Flora B. Williams 101, of Ironton, passed away on Friday, Feb. 06, 2009, at her residence. She was born Feb. 1, 1908, in Ironton, the daughter of the late George and Lizzie Gwilliams Williams.
She was a retired school teacher, beginning her career in a one-room school house in LaGrange, moving on to Corryville, then teaching at Whitwell School in Ironton for 30 years. Upon retiring she received the Lillian Humphrey Award. She graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and the University of Rio Grande. She played on the women’s college basketball team and was a swim team member. She also played tennis and golf. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church of Ironton for 89 years where she was director of the Sunday School. She also served as the church pianist for many years. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Eastern Star of Ironton. She was also a member of the River Valley Health System’s Ladies Auxillary. She was a breast cancer survivor
She is survived by two nephews; George (Helen) Williams of Ironton, and John Lane of Oak Harbor; three nieces, Lorene (Harold) Eagle of Independence, Mo., Lucille Kinstler of Lexington, Ky., and Jule Williams of Ironton; and many other nieces and nephews. Also surviving are family caregivers, great nieces and nephews, Kathy and Steve Tompson, Debbie and Donnie Hixon, great-great nieces and nephews; Mandy and Darin Abbott, Jenny and Adam Risner, and great-great-great nieces and nephew, Gabrielle and Lillianna Risner and Reece Abbott. Also are special friends, Pat Hackworth, Sherry Prince, Teresa Staton, and Paula Bellomy.
Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery, Section G, Ironton, Ohio with Elders George Williams and Debbie Williams Hixon officiating. Friends may call at the Tracy Brammer Funeral Home, Ironton, Ohio from 6 to 8 p.m. today with Eastern Star services held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are requested in her memory to Community of Christ Church.
