The meet belonged to the Portsmouth Trojans, but not before the Chesapeake Panthers had their say.
Portsmouth tallied 86.5 points to win the Ironton Invitational Saturday while Chesapeake was second with 81 points.
The Panthers Robbie Isaacs had a big day as he won meet high point honors in an effort to give his team the meet win.
Isaacs won the 100 meter dash at 11.2 seconds, the 200 with a 22.7 time, took second in the pole vault at 12-6, and was third in the long jump at 20-6.
Chesapeake’s Danny Wassell was second in the high jump and 400 dash while Chris Best second in the 300 and 110 hurdles. Jason Sutphin was fifth in the pole vault at 10-6 and Ryan Slone sixth in the 800 run with a 2:14.5 clocking.
Watkins Memorial was third with 79 points, host Ironton had 65 points, and fifth was Wheelersburg with 62 points. Huntington High had 50 points followed by Gallipolis with 47, Logan 19, Warren Local 10, and Fairland 2.5.
Ironton’s James Taylor had a good day as he won the high jump at 6-2, was fifth in the 100 meter dash in a photo finish from 3-6 place, and was third in the 400 meter dash.
Teammate Jason Harmon was second in the long jump by just two inches and third in the 110 high hurdles. Brad Washburn was fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 1600.
"Harmon did real well. He increased his long jump by a foot, was third in the hurdles and that’s the first time he’s run the hundred all year. And James Taylor had a good meet despite long jumping and high jumping and running the 100 all at about the same time," said Ironton coach Greg Cronacher.
Ironton’s Aaron Markel won the discus with a toss of 143-5 and Redgie Arden was second at 134-10. Erique Bacon was second in the shot put at 45-2 3/4.
"Our throwers did remarkably well, too. Markel and Arden threw well in the discus, and Bacon got his personal best in the shot put. And Mark Gleichauf did well but he got to the finals and didn’t place. I also though Brad Washburn ran really well today," said Cronacher.
The Minford Relays are at 5 p.m. Friday.
