Rock Hill used a punishing ground game to dominate the Vikings 31-6 Friday in a non-league matchup.
The Redmen pounded out 335 rushing yards en route to its second win in as many games. Scott Turley ran 20 times for 102 yards to lead a balance attack. Richie Webb, taking over for the injured Tyler Virgin, had 70 yards on five tries while Johnny Webb added 54 yards on 12 attempts.
"We dominated up front. The defense really set the tone," said Redmen coach Andy Hall. "Defensively, that was our best effort."
Vinton County rushed for nearly 400 yards last week but was limited to 151 yards by the Rock Hill defense.
Rock Hill scored on its second possession of the game. The drive went 53 yards in nine plays and lasted nearly five minutes. Turley rammed 6 yards off tackle to capped the drive and it was 6-0.
The lead went to 12-0 with 4:25 left in the half followed a long, time-consuming drive that came on the heels of a defensive stand.
The Redmen defense stopped Vinton County at the 1-yard line with 11:31 left in the half. Rock Hill then went 99 yards in 19 plays. Quarterback Gabe Medinger ran the final yard.
"The defense started it all, and the offense just crammed it down their throats. We’re not where we want to be, but we’re getting better," said Hall. "We said we had to cut down on turnovers, and we’ve had just two in two games."
Vinton County began the second half with a no-huddle offense and put together a scoring drive of its own.
The Vikings went 69 yards in 12 plays that Travis Bethel finished off on a 3-yard run as he stretched the ball across the goal line. The conversion kick failed and it was 12-6.
Rock Hill was stopped on its next two plays, but Medinger hit Webb for 24 yards, and then Webb ran 41 yards on the following play to the 5-yard line. Two plays later Dilley bulled into the end zone from a yard out and it was 18-6.
The Redmen scored on the first play of the fourth quarter as Medinger ran one yard and it was 24-6 with 11:58 to play.
The final score was a 1-yard run by Turley midway through the quarter. Sean Primm kicked the extra point to finish the scoring.
