COLUMBUS – The Ironton Fighting Tigers stood among the big boys, and they stood up very tall and straight.
Playing in the talented and prestigious St. Charles Invitational Saturday at Champions Golf Club, Ironton finished sixth among 18 teams, and just behind Kettering Alter and Columbus Academy.
Alter, which ended Ironton’s three straight state championships run last season, and Academy are expected to challenge for the Division II state title this year.
"It was a good finish against the strongest field in the state," Ironton golf coach Bill Washburn said. "But we’re still making too many big numbers on holes."
Upper Arlington won the tournament with a 304 score. Ashland was next at 307, and Dublin Coffman and Kettering Alter tied at 313.
Academy had a 314 while Ironton scored a 319 team total, good for a sixth place tie with Div. I power Cincinnati Moeller.
Brad Washburn was Ironton’s team medalist with a 74. His total left him tied for third place with five others. David French of Upper Arlington had a 71 and Luke Sondes of Upper Arlington 72.
Adam Rudmann was next forIronton at 75. He tied for ninth overall with Adam Flutty of Westerville North and Jackson Garn of Cincinnati Moeller.
Also scoring for Ironton were Zach Christian with an 81, Bo McGinnis had an 87, and Andy Brown carded a 93.
"We’re getting very consistent play from Brad and Adam, and Zach Christian has been a pleasant surprise with his very steady play. As a team, we can still do a lot better," said Washburn.
