AMANDA-CLEARCREEK – A traditional football powerhouse remained true to form Saturday night as the Amanda-Clearcreek Ace blanked the Coal Grove Hornets 66-0.

The Aces amassed 485 rushing yards and 524 total yards as they improved to 2-1. Shawn Cole gained 155 yards on 11 carries, Brandon Kern got 119 on 11 tries, and Thad Helber added 72 on just four attempts.

Coal Grove, 0-3, had 125 total yards, 108 on the ground. Jason Adams ran 17 times for 53 yards to lead the offense.

"We need to get better. We have a lot of guys out with injuries, but we played an awful good team tonight," Hornets coach Nick Miller.

The Aces got the ball at the Coal Grove 42 and two plays later Kern went 36 yards for the touchdown. Tim Gall kicked the point after.

The Hornets punted on their next series and Kern caught a 25-yard pass to the 15. Cole then ran virtually untouched for the touchdown and it was 14-0.

Another punt set up a quick four-play drive highlighted by Cole’s 22-yard run. Kern went the final 7 yards for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Less than three minutes later, the Aces scored when Gall hit Todd Helber with a pass that bounced off his chest, but Helber grabbed the ball and ran into the end zone for the touchdown and it was 27-0.

Coal Grove picked up a first down but could not sustain a drive. After the punt, the Ace used just six plays to score with Gall hitting Helber on a 4-yard crossing pattern. Thad Helber’s conversion run made it 35-0.

After yet another punt, Clearcreek scored when Thad Helber bolted down the sidelines 46 yards for the touchdown and it was 42-0 at the half.

Clearcreek’s starters put two more touchdowns on the board in the third quarter as Cole went 49 yards early and Gall raced 18 yards for a score with 7:11 on the clock.
