The South Point Pointers turned the ball over six times – four interceptions and two fumbles – and the Wheelersburg Pirates took advantage of every opportunity in a 56-0 romp Friday night.
The PIrates, 4-0, led just 7-0 at the end of the first quarter on an 11-yard run by Luke Emnett.
"We played pretty well for a while. We played pretty good defense the first quarter," Pointers coach Chris Watts. "But then we fumbled a couple of times and it snowballed quickly. They’re a good football team.
"But we finally got the kids doing the things we want them to do. The kids played hard."
A scoring drive to start the second quarter ended in Emnett’s second touchdown run from 9 yards out and it was 14-0.
Fullback Gabe Klaiber powered in from 2 yards out and it was 21-0.
Emnett exploded for a 61-yard touchdown run and the Pirates lead was 28-0.
Jason Schmidt got into the act with an interception of a tipped pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-0.
Wheelersburg tackled the South Point punter in the end zone for a safety to cap the first half scoring.
Quarterback Andy Gill hit Schmidt on a square out for a 16-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter as the lead went to 43-0.
Klaiber bolted 56 yards up the shoot for a touchdown with 2:39 left in the quarter and it was 50-0.
Watts was impressed with the Pirates defense.
"They’re quick and they have some speed. When they have a chance to make a play, they do. They’re usually around the ball," said Watts.
The Pirates second unit got the final touchdown on a 33-yard run by Ryan Mowery.
South Point, 0-4, was limited to just 84 net total yards after several quarterback sacks.
