To date, 72.51 percent of the $150,000 goal – $108,778 – has been raised, said Tim Selb, local campaign chairman.

United Way agencies in Lawrence County touch countless lives each year, with benefits that go far beyond the $150,000 campaign goal for 1999, Selb said.

"The United Way serves so many people in Lawrence County that it would be impossible to count every person whose life has been touched in a positive way," he said. "The flood of two years ago is a good example. So many were served that we couldn’t begin to count them all. It is unlikely the general public is aware of just how many people were helped by United Way agencies during the flood."

Selb said the newly formed Lawrence County advisory board is working to re-establish that rapport between the people who make the donations and the general public.

"We must re-educate the general public of the importance of the services provided by the United Way," he added.

An additional group of local volunteers has helped bring the campaign near to achieving its goal, Selb stressed.

"Our new volunteers as well as those who have been long-time United Way volunteers are reaching out to individuals and businesses that have not been contacted in recent years.

"The goal is achievable even with the loss of Cabletron," he said. "Lawrence County people always are willing to help, and sometimes, they even come out of the woodwork to help."

In addition to those individuals who work in Lawrence County, area residents who live in the county but who work in other states can help make the local goal a reality by designating their gifts for Lawrence County.

"They simply have to note their desire when filling out their pledge cards," he explained.
