"When we got going full court with the (fast)break and press, that’s when we were able to make our (scoring) runs," Vikings coach Brent Wilcoxon said. "When they slowed the tempo that’s when they made their runs."

K. D. Payne and Justin Myers combined for 39 points as the Vikings improved to 2-0 on the season. Payne had a game-high 21 points while Myers scored 18 points, had seven rebounds, and blocked six shots.

Brad Carpenter had six assists and Noah Henson five steals.

"It’s a big win because (Fairland) is a school that’s bigger than us and they have a good tradition in basketball," Wilcoxon said.

Jay Capper scored 15 points and Buddy Massie had 14 to lead the Dragons, 0-1.

The Vikings were 24 of 62 from the field for just 39 percent but drained 12 3-pointers.

"We like to put it up," Wilcoxon said.

Symmes Valley took an 8-0 lead to start the game but J. W. Jones scored 6 points as Fairland rallied to take a 20-16 lead.

The Dragons were up 34-28 at the half, but then Myers scored 12 points and Payne 8 the third quarter as Symmes Valley doubled up the scoring and took a 52-46 lead.

Capper had 7 points in the fourth, but the Vikings were able to maintain the lead and remain unbeaten.

Symmes Valley plays at Beaver Eastern Friday in their Southern Ohio Conference opener.

Rock Hill 74, St. Joe 52

PEDRO – Big start, big win.

The Rock Hill Redmen used a big first quarter to propel them to a 74-52 rout of the St. Joe Flyers Tuesday in a non-league game.

Brian Tennant led three players in double figures with 22 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Billy Mullins scored 16 points while Brent McCoy had 15 points.

St. Joe, 1-1, was led by Bub Waginger with 19 points. Bill Dressel and Matt Frazer added 9 each. Frazer had six rebounds.

"We didn’t play well at all. You can’t give up 24 points the first quarter. We were flat and we weren’t ready to play," Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan said. "Our defense was horrible. But they shot the ball awful well."

Tennant, Mullins, and McCoy scored 6 points each the first quarter as Rock Hill jumped ahead 24-10. Tennant scored 6 more points the second quarter with Mullins and McCoy getting 4 each as the lead grew to 42-21.

St. Joe was 9 of 31 from the field the first half with 20 shots coming from inside the paint.

Waginger got the hot hand the third quarter with 13 points including a pair of 3-pointers as St. Joe cut the deficit to 52-38.

But Tennant scored 8 points and McCoy sank 5 of 6 from the line to end any Fyler comeback hopes

St. Joe plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at New Boston.

In the reserve game, Rock Hill won 48-20 as Isaac Kitchen, George Mullins, and Ryan Music scored 10 points each and Travis Gabehart 9. Joey Laber had 12 points for St. Joe.
