It’s called basketball because the ball is supposed to go in the basket. The St. Joe Flyers didn’t get the definition right Tuesday night as they shot just 30 percent from the field in a 62-57 loss to the Ohio Valley Christian Defenders.
"The whole object of this game is to put the ball in the basket and we’re just not doing it," Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan said.
After a strong shooting performance on Friday, St. Joe followed up that effort by making only 18-of-59 field goal attempts. The Flyers also hit just 7-of-22 from 3-point range and converted 16 of 29 foul shots.
"We didn’t play well and we didn’t shoot well. It wasn’t just one type of shot. We had good looks and we had layups we missed. We struggled from every aspect as far as shooting the basketball," Sheridan said.
OVC, 3-4, had been playing without starters Chris Burnette and Adam Holcomb this season. But the pair returned against the Flyers and Holcomb scored 17 and Burnette 13 to lead the Defenders.
"Their kids played hard and went to the boards hard," Sheridan said.
Bill Dressel paced St. Joe with 18 points and four rebounds. Eric Waginger had 17 points, four rebounds, and three steals, and Bub Waginger scored 14 points with four rebounds and two assists.
Eric Waginger had 4 of the Flyers the first quarter but the Defenders went ahead 15-10.
Dressel scored 6 points the second quarter but OVC pulled away to a 31-23 lead at the break.
Eric and Bub Waginger combined for 10 points the third as St. Joe cut the deficit to 42-40.
Dressel scored 7 points the fourth quarter but OVC was able to hang on.
St. Joe, 2-4, hosts Rock Hill Tuesday, Dec. 28.
