Chesapeake beat Fairland 38-29 in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams in a game that saw the two teams combine for just 18 points the second half – four by Fairland.

"I don’t know if everyone was tentative or what," Chesapeake coach Lynn Sheets said. "But we played pretty good defense. It wasn’t like we were giving up layup after layup and they missed, but they did miss their shots."

Fairland managed just two baskets the second half, one in each quarter.

Chesapeake’s 7th straight win gave the Lady Panthers a 7-3 record overall. Fairland fell to 7-2.

"It’s a big win. We’ll take them any way we can take them. I know (Fairland coach) Jack (Harris) was real disappointed, but I was too that we didn’t make more baskets."

Kati Fuller and Erin Sutphin had 15 points each to lead Chesapeake. Brooke Fisher had 7 points and Ashley Harris 6 to lead Fairland.

Sutphin had 6 points the first quarter as Chesapeake took an 11-9 lead. Fisher got 5 of the Lady Dragons points.

Fuller came back to score 8 points the second quarter but Fairland rallied behind 5 points by Jeana Diamond to take a 25-24 lead at the half.

But then came the third quarter.

Sutphin scored all 4 of Chesapeake’s points while Fisher had the lone Fairland basket and the Lady Panthers led 28-27.

"No one could make a shot the third quarter. We missed wide-open jumpers and layups. The fourth quarter they had the same trouble and we were finally able to hit some shots," said Sheets.

Chesapeake finally built a 5-point midway through the fourth quarter and ran nearly three minutes off the clock before finally getting into the one-and-one. Fuller converted 4-of-7 foul shots and the defense held Fairland to a single field goal by Michelle Payne and wrapped up the win.

"We finally got a five-point lead and made them foul us," said Sheets.

Chesapeake plays at Rock Hill Monday in a showdown for first place.

"I’d say Rock Hill is the team in the league. They’ll be hard to beat down there," said Sheets.

CHESHIRE – Rachel Waugh and Stacy White combined for 50 points to lead the South Gallia Lady Rebels to a 74-61 win over the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings Thursday.

Waugh had a game-high 29 points and White 21.

Symmes Valley was led by Keren Bell with 25 points, 16 rebounds, and six steals.

Donahoe scored 10 points the first quarter to offset 10 points by Waugh as Symmes Valley took a 16-13 lead.

White scored 11 of her points the second quarter as South Gallia went up 38-35 at the half. White got 11 more points the third quarter as the Rebels built a 57-48 lead.

Bell scored 10 of the Lady Vikings points the fourth quarter.

"We had enough shots to score 80 or more. We didn’t shoot the ball very well at all, but defensively you can’t give up 74 points," Vikings coach Rob Bess said.

Symmes Valley, 1-7, converted just 22-of-78 from the field for just 28 percent. The Vikings made a mere 13 of 30 from the field.

Symmes Valley plays at Green Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
