The Fairland Dragons needed an offensive spark, and K. C. Jones came to live at the right time as he scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 52-45 win over the Rock Hill Redmen Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
"The kids played real well. K. C. Jones played a real good ballgame," Fairland coach Joey Thacker said. "And (Jay) Capper did a good job inside and Aaron (Swanton) did well at the point."
Capper finished with 14 points and Swanton had 11 points. Buddy Massie handed out six assists.
Brian Tennant led Rock Hill with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Billy Mullins scored 13.
The game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter as Jones scored 7 points. Tanner Heaberlin had 6 for the Redmen.
Fairland took a 27-25 halftime lead as Swanton and Glen Chapman combined for 10 points the second quarter. Tennant had 6 to keep the Redmen on the Dragons heels.
Capper got 6 points the third quarter and Fairland was up 39-35.
"The kids were real patient. We didn’t take the air out of it, but we were patient. Unlike the Chesapeake game, we stuck with game plan the third quarter. We got a lot of good shots early in the quarter," Thacker said.
Swanton got 5 points the fourth quarter to offset 6 by Mullins and Fairland was 4-of-6 from the line over the final minute to ice the win.
Fairland is now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the OVC. The victory marked the first time Fairland has won at Rock Hill during Thacker’s short thre-year tenure.
Rock Hill slipped to 6-5 and 2-1 in the conference.
"We’ve played our two toughest road games and got away with one win," Thacker said. "I’m real proud of the kids. Rock Hill isn’t too bad. They’ve won some big games,"
In the reserve game, Rock Hill won 49-29 as Ryan Music scored 21 points and Ryan Townsend added 8. Glen Chapman had 10 and Chris Hardy 8 for Fairland.
