Leading just 31-30 at the half, South Point made a slight adjustment at the half and came back to beat the Coal Grove Hornets 71-52 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The winless Hornets battled the Pointers the first half mainly behind the scoring of Brandon Hicks who scored 17 of his game-high 21 points.

"We knew what they were going to do and we knew what we wanted to do against them. We clarified our defense at halftime and did a better job on Hicks the second half," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said.

Shane Holsinger had 20 points to lead South Point. Jared Perdue and Brian Cremeans had 16 each and B. J. Ferrell had 13.

Holsinger poured in 13 points the first quarter as South Point jumped out to a 21-10 lead.

"We came out playing well, but we didn’t play well the second quarter and Coal Grove made a run. I told our kids Coal Grove will play hard and won’t quit, and they didn’t. But our kids came out the second half and stepped it up," Lafon said.

Cremeans came out and hit three shots from behind the arc as he scored nine points the third quarter and South Point opened up a 55-42 lead..

South Point, 5-5 and 1-2, plays at Portsmouth Tuesday. Coal Grove, 0-8 and 0-3, plays at Fairland Tuesday in an OVC game.
