Fairland’s inside tandem of Jeana Diamond and Ashley Harris combined for 32 points as Fairland beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 42-33 Thursday.

"We played pretty well against a good team. We were in the game down to the last minute," Ironton coach Kevin Richardson said.

"(Fairland coach) Jack (Harris) does a great job. He worked the ball inside to his big girls and then once he got the lead he held the ball and forced us to chase them. Diamond and Harris are tough to defend and they can go outside and hurt you as well as inside."

Diamond had 18 points and Ashley Harris 14 to lead Fairland, 17-3.

Ashley Harris scored nine points the first quarter as Fairland took an 11-4 lead. But Ironton was within 18-11 at the half.

Diamond had nine points the third quarter as the lead went to 32-22.

After Fairland opened up a a 40-27 midway through the fourth quarter, Sarah Herman and Candace Ferguson scored inside and then Jessica Ensor came up with a steal a layup with 1:26 to play that got Ironton within 40-33.

But the Lady Dragons were able to run time off the clock and secure the win.

"Two months ago they blew us out by 40 points, but our effort tonight was tremendous for four quarters," Richardson said. "Down the stretch we had some good looks and didn’t hit, and we forced turnovers but couldn’t take advantage of them. Still, we never let up and I was proud of their effort."

Fairland plays in the Division III sectional Feb. 19. Ironton (6-9) faces Minford at 7 p.m. Monday at Rock Hill in the tournament.
