CHILLICOTHE – Coach Melissa Brown had a confused look on her face. It was her Green Lady Bobcats team on the floor, but she just didn’t recognize them.
There was no memory lapse on Brown’s part. She merely didn’t recognize the team that had won 14 games and claimed a second straight Southern Ohio Conference Div. I championship.
Instead, what Brown saw was the Lady Bobcats make only 13 of 55 shots for 23.6 percent and just 5 of 24 from behind the arc for 20.8 percent. The end result was a 52-33 loss to the White Oak Ladycats Thursday in the Division IV semifinals at Zane Trace High School.
White Oak (14-8) didn’t exactly put up sensational numbers. The Ladycats only connected on 23 of 73 shots for 31.5 percent and 1 of 5 from 3-point range for 20 percent.
"We’re a different team than the one who played tonight," said Brown. "We played sluggish. I don’t know how bad we got outrebounded. Most of them were right underneath them."
The Ladycats held a commanding 51-31 rebound advantage, 26 on the offensive end. Adrian Vance, who led White Oak with 17 points, pulled down 22 rebounds including 14 on the offensive end.
Trisha Myers added 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals for the Ladycats who had 19 steals as a team. Carrie Naylor added 10 points.
Green (14-6) was paced by Emily Horsley with 12 points and Jennifer Cline with seven points and 14 rebounds.
Horsley’s points came on four 3-pointers. She now owns the Green single-season record for 3-pointers with 33, four more than the old record.
The Lady Bobcats made just 2 of 10 shots the first quarter and 2 of 13 the second quarter as they trailed 30-10 at the break.
Green held the lead once when Horsley hit a 3-pointer at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter and it was 3-2.
A 15-footer by Courtney Moore had Green down 6-5, but that was the closest the Lady Bobcats would get the rest of the game.
White Oaks were up 14-5 at the end of the first quarter and used a 5-0 run to begin the second quarter.
Moore’s 3-pointer got Green within 19-8 at the 4:08 mark, but White Oak finished with a 6-0 spurt at the end of the half.
The lead was as many as 20 points the third quarter including 43-23 at the end of the stanza.
The Ladycats biggest lead was 48-24 on a layup by Myers with just under five minutes to play.
Brown was disappointed but philosophical about the season-ending loss.
"We had a wonderful season," Brown said. "We won the SOC for the second straight year, we were 14-6, and we won the sectional. The girls really worked hard. At some points in time the season had to end, it was just too early for me."
White Oak will play Oak Hill at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Zane Trace High School.
