CHESAPEAKE – Finally, a win for the home team.

Each year the Chesapeake Lions Club hosts a track and field meet for boys and girls at Chesapeake High School. But each year it is a visiting team in the field that comes away with the team championship trophy.

Until Friday night when Chesapeake used the running of Robby Isaacs and Danny Wassell to lead the Panthers to the Lions Club meet title.

"That’s the first time we’ve won that thing since I don’t know when. I know it’s been 11 years," said Phil Davis said, the Panthers 11-year veteran track coach.

Chesapeake easily outdistanced the field with 122 points. Gallipolis was second with 80.5 and the Ironton Fighting Tigers were a mere half-point behind in third place.

Winfield (W.Va.) was fourth with 71 points followed by the Coal Grove Hornets with 46, South Point Pointers 36, Fairland Dragons 21, River Valley and Spring Valley (W.Va.) tied with 17, and the Rock Hill Redmen had 5.5.

Isaacs claimed meet high point honors with 29 points. He won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.9 seconds, just one-tenth of a second off his record-setting time last year, tied with River Valley freshman Aaron Brown for first place. The tie was a result of the two runners being in different heats.

Isaacs also finished second to Ike Simmons of Gallipolis in the long jump by a mere 1/4-inch.

Wassell took first in the high jump at 6-foot-4 and was clocked at 51.8 to win the 400 meter dash.

But the Panthers had more going for them than their two stellar seniors.

Sophomore Ryan Slone won the 800 at 2:06 over Ironton’s Brad Washburn who was running with a cast on his wrist. Washburn also placed second in the 1600.

Slone ran a leg on the winning 4×800 relay team along with Jayson Holland, Josh Dillon, and Brad Fulton for an 8:36 clocking, but it was Slone, Fulton, Isaacs, and Wassell who turned in the best relay of the night, running a meet record 3:33.3 in the 4×400.

"Slone had an excellent meet, and Wassell and Isaacs did their usual," said Davis. "Fulton stepped up and ran two 400 races and he’s a half-miler. And Josh Waugh was right in the hunt a couple of times. He was just off the next place.

"And Eric Myers stepped up well for us. We had some good performances from a bunch of people. The two relay races may have been the most exciting events all night."

Myers was third in the shot put and the discus. The Panthers Michael Hunt won the 300 hurdles at 42.8.

Ironton’s Erique Bacon won the shot put by more than two feet (46-5 1/4). Teammate Jason Harmon was second in the 110 hurdles after leading the entire race until becoming tangled in the final hurdle.

Harmon leaped 20-7 to place third in the long jump.

South Point’s Jarred Smith took the discus with a toss of 150-2. Ironton’s Redgie Arden had his best throw of the young season (139-3) to place second.

Coal Grove’s Jeff Hamilton cleared 13-feet and was second in the pole vault.

In the girls meet, Gallipolis was the easy team winner but Rock Hill’s Jessica Kerns came away the individual winner with 34 points for meet high-point honors.

Gallipolis had 110 points, Winfield 88, Rock Hill 82, Ironton 54, Boyd County 53, Chesapeake 36, Fairland 28, Coal Grove 27, South Point 13, River Valley 3, and Spring Valley 2.

Kerns won the 100 meter hurdles (16.0 seconds), the long jump (14-5 1/4), the high jump (4-10), and was fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Rock Hill’s Mandy McDonie won the 300 hurdles and finished second behind Kerns in the 100 hurdles.

Fairland’s Chelsea Walls was second in the 1600 (6:02.5) and fourth in each the 800 and 3200 runs.

Ironton’s Sarah Herman was second in the 300 hurdles. Teammate Rachael Perry was runner-up in the 100 meter dash (13.0) behind Gallipolis’ Shanna Carter who set a meet record with 12.4 seconds. Perry was third in the 200.

Coal Grove’s Michelle Christian finished second in the 800. Chesapeake’s Laura King was second in the shot put and teammate Brittany Pollack was second in the long jump.

Gallipolis claimed the combined trophy for boys and girls.

The Coal Grove Giovanni’s Pizza Invitational will be held next Friday.
