Fairland lost its first tournament game 8-0 to powerhouse Cabell Midland, then bounced back to beat Wheeling Park 5-1.

Cabell Midland won as Lee Ann Ellis, who has signed with Tennessee, allowed just one hit. Fairland’s Jennifer Jones had a bunt single in the seventh inning.

The Lady Dragons came back to beat Wheeling Park 5-1 behind the pitching of JoAnn Harmon.

Harmon ran her record to 4-0 as she struck out nine, did not walk a batter, and allowed just four hits.

"JoAnn is throwing really well," Fairland coach Jim Bailey said. "I hated to see the game end because she was pitching so well."

Fairland took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the third when Jones walked, stole second, went third on a wild pitch, and scored on a hit by Brooke Fisher.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth.

Harmon reached on an error, courtesy runner Carol Belvin moved up on a passed ball, and Paula Daniel singled Belvin to third. Daniel took second on the throw home, Holly Black singled for a run, and Jessica Phillips grounded out as the second run scored.

Fairland got its final two runs in the fifth.

Fisher doubled and Maggie Staggs singled and went to second on the throw to third. Jeana Diamond then singled home both runs.

Staggs was 2-for-2, Diamond 2-3, and Fisher 2-4 to lead a nine-hit attack.

Fairland, 4-1, hosts Chesapeake Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game. The Lady Dragons face North Marion next weekend when the Sluggerfest resumes.

Layne pitched a three-hitter as South Point beat Parkersburg 5-1. She struck out six and walked one.

Baise was 2-for-3 as South Point got only five hits.

South Point took a 1-0 lead the first inning when Baise and Nekka Mains singled, and Nikki Lewis hit into a fielder’s choice.

The Lady Pointers scored four times in the third.

Whitney Morrison doubled to start the inning, Baise reached on an error, and Mains was safe on a fielder’s choice as Morrison scored. Lewis was on through an error as two more scored.

Erica Griffith grounded out as the final run scored.

In the second game, Herbert Hoover got four runs in the ninth inning to outlast the Lady Pointers 7-3.

Down 2-0 in the seventh, Baise led off with a base hit, moved up on a ground out, and scored when Lewis singled. Jamie Carson hit a pop fly ball that was dropped and allowed the tying run to score.

Each team got a run in the eighth under the international tiebreaker rule.
