McClean went 3-for-4 with a home run and drove in four runs as the Coal Grove Hornets beat the Chesapeake Panthers 8-4 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"McClean played a great game, and not just offensively. He made six plays in the field out of the 10 they hit," Hornets coach John Jones said.

McClean’s hitting backed the five-hit pitching of Jarrod Keaton, now 2-0. Keaton racked up 10 strikeouts and walked four in going the distance.

"He’s pitched two seven inning games and he’s been pretty consistent. He threw a good ball game," said Jones.

Coal Grove is 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the OVC. Chesapeake slipped to 1-7 and 1-2 in the league.

Besides McClean, Josh Collins was 2-4 with two RBI and Dave Webb was 1-3 with two RBI.

Michael Newman went 2-3 to lead the Panthers.

Chesapeake took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, but Coal Grove came back with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the inning, Noah Phillips walked, Newman doubled, and Bell singled home the runners. Bell moved up on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the inning, Dean Mader walked, Josh Fields was hit by pitch, Josh Keaton walked to load the bases, and Webb doubled home two.

Collins singled in a run and McClean unloaded a three-run homer.

Coal Grove’s lead went to 7-3 in the fourth when Collins singled, stole second, and McClean had a run-scoring single.

Chesapeake got a run back in the fifth. Adam Pemberton singled, Andy Clark walked, and a passed ball scored Pemberton.

The Hornets pushed across an insurance run in the sixth.

Webb was safe on an error, Ryan Brown walked, both moved up on a passed ball, and Collins hit into a fielder’s choice as Webb scored.

On Tuesday, Coal Grove hosts Portsmouth and Chesapeake entertains Lucasville Valley.
