COAL GROVE – This time showdown No. 2 went to the Pointers.

Avenging an earlier loss to Coal Grove, the South Point Pointers downed the Hornets 8-5 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

South Point improved to 7-2 overall but 4-1 in the OVC, one-half game ahead of the Hornets who are now 4-2 and 3-1 in the league.

Jared Waggoner went the distance to get the win for South Point as he struck out 10, walked six, and allowed seven hits. Jarrod Keaton turned in a strong performance for the Hornets as he fanned 10, walked four, and gave up 10 hits.

Patrick Panell, Jamie Douglas, Jarred Perdue, and Waggoner all went 2-for-4 to lead South Point. Keaton and Ryan Brown were 2-for-4 for the Hornets.

The Pointers got two runs in the first inning.

Brian Eaches walked, Patrick Panell singled, and Jamie Douglas had a two-run, two-out single.

Coal Grove got a run back in the first when Tim McClean and Keaton singled and Josh Fields had an RBI single with two outs.

The Hornets tied the game in the second when Brown slammed a solo home run.

In the sixth, Douglas singled and went to third on an error. With one out, Shane Fuller laid down a squeeze bunt to score Douglas.

Fuller moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Jarred Perdue singled. Brian Cremeans followed with a two-run homer and it was 6-2.

Coal Grove got a run back in the bottom of the inning.

Scott Lewis led off with a walk, was forced out by Ryan Young who moved up on a passed ball, and Brown had a run-scoring single.

Waggoner singled to start the seventh and Weaver singled with two outs. A balk scored Waggoner from third, Fuller walked, and Perdue had an RBI single.

Coal Grove rallied for two runs in its half of the seventh.

With two outs, Dean Mader was safe on an error, Josh Fields and Scott Lewis walked to load the bases, and Young had a run-single. Young reached on an error as another run scored, but Waggoner got the final out to end the game.
