Ona, W.Va. – The No. 1 team met its match. Parkersburg South, ranked No. 1 in the West Virginia Class AAA poll, ran into Tara Layne and the South Point Lady Pointers.

Layne fashioned a three-hitter and Nikki Lewis drove in the game’s only run as South Point edged top-ranked Parkersburg South 1-0 Saturday in the Cabell Midland Sluggerfest.

Layne struck out two and walked just one as she pitched the complete game victory.

The game’s only run scored in the fourth.

With one out, Whitney Morrison reached on an error and Sarah Baise bunted for a hit and Morrison went to third on the play.

Baise stole second but the next batter struck out. Lewis then came through with a line single to right-center.

Lewis and Morrison were 1-for-1 and Basie 1-3.

In the first game, South Point beat Richwood 3-2 behind Layne’s four-hitter.

Layne fanned eight and walked one in going the distance. Nikki Lewis, Sarah Baise, and Allison Perdue all had hits for South Point.

The Lady Pointers finished the tournament 3-1.

South Point is now 8-3. The Lady Pointers play at Rock Hill Monday.
