Fairland won for the second time in as many days behind the pitching of JoAnn Harmon as the Lady Dragons topped the Pointers 5-3.

It was a much-needed win for Fairland which is now 10-3 overall but more importantly 5-2 in the OVC. South Point fell to 9-7 and 4-3 in the conference.

"That’s a good win. That gives us a leg up on the league. You can’t afford to lose too many and still win the league," Fairland coach Jim Bailey said.

Harmon pitched a five-hitter as she improved to 9-1 on the season. She struck out two and walked two.

Fairland managed eight hits off South Point pitcher Tara Layne who had one strikeout and did not walk a batter.

"We got the hits at the times we needed them," said Bailey.

South Point got a run in the first when Sarah Stevens singled, Shannon James put down a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and came home when Whitney Morrison grounded out.

Fairland came back to score three in the fifth to lead 3-1.

Paula Daniel had a leadoff single, Holly Black reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners at first and second, and Jennifer Jones had a two-run double. Jones came around to score on an error in the outfield.

South Point tied the game with a two runs in the top of the sixth.

With one out, Morrison walked and Sarah Baise put down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown into the right field corner allowing both runners to score and tie the game.

But Fairland answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Brooke Fisher singled to start the inning. Harmon and Daniel followed with hits as Fisher scored to break the deadlock. Fisher went to second on the throw to third base. Black then had a base hit to score Harmon.

Harmon retired the first two batters in the seventh before Stevens singled, but the next batter popped out to end the game.

On Friday, Fairland travels to Rock Hill and South Point plays at Chesapeake in league games.
