HAVERHILL – After finally getting to play again, the St. Joe Flyers finally got their bats going again.
Rain and Holy Week had the Flyers idle for more than a week. When they returned to the field this week they lost two straight mercy rule games in which they scored a total of three runs.
But that all changed Friday as St. Joe spanked 12 hits and rolled past the New Boston Tigers 15-4 in five innings.
"It was nice to get the bats going again. We struggled at the plate the last two games," Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan said. "We’ve been off so long, we needed to string a few games together."
Senior Charley Yaniko picked up the win with a three-hitter as he struck out seven and walked eight.
"Charley did a pretty good job for us," Sheridan said. "He had a little control problem, but part of that is being off for so long. We needed to get a good game from him."
Pat Malone and Eric Waginger each went 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the St. Joe offense. Andy Stack was 2-3 with a pair of doubles.
New Boston used an error, two walks, two singles, and a double to score three times in the first.
But St. Joe came back to take the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Bub Waginger reached on an error, stole second and third, and then Eric Waginger, Yaniko, and Andy Stack all walked to force in a run. Danny Stack walked to score Eric Waginger, Andy Heighton walked to send Andy Stack home, and Kyle Johnson had a two-run single to cap the rally.
Malone and Eric Waginger slugged back-to-back solo home runs in the second to put the Flyers ahead 7-3.
In the third, St. Joe scored four times to build a comfortable 11-3 lead.
Malone walked and scored on Eric Waginger’s triple. Andy Stack and Pat McGinnis each singled to produce a run. Danny Stack and Heighton then followed with run-scoring singles.
After New Boston got a run in the top of the fourth, the Flyers pushed across their final four runs scored in the bottom of the inning.
Bub Waginger and Malone doubled for the first run. Eric Waginger walked and Yaniko doubled home two more runs. Andy Stack then doubled home Yaniko to complete the scoring.
St. Joe, now 4-6, hosts Fairland Monday.
"We haven’t played three games in a week since the first week of the season. We had 20 games scheduled over three weeks and we play 10. But we’ve got five scheduled next week," said Sheridan. "Right now we just need to play games. You can’t get in any kind of a groove."
