Down but not out of the Ohio Valley Conference race, the Panthers beat the South Point Pointers 8-3 Monday to cling to their title hopes.
"Mathmatically, we’re not out of it," Panthers coach Joe Waugh said. "We’re just going to take this week one game at a time and see where the cards fall. We need some help, but we have to hold up our end of it."
Chesapeake, 5-10 and 4-5 in the league, hosts Coal Grove Tuesday. South Point dropped to 11-6 and 6-4 in the OVC.
Andy Clark and Mark Adams combined on a three-hitter. Adams worked the final four innings for the win.
Chesapeake jumped in front 4-0 in the first.
Tony Bell singled, stole second, and scored on Clark’s double. Clark moved around to score on a pair of passed balls.
Noah Phillips walked and Josh Waugh crushed a home run to deep center field to cap the uprising.
The lead went to 5-0 in the third when Zeb Best was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Todd Oberly.
The Panthers added a run in the fourth.
Adams singled, moved to second on a passed ball, and came around on Joey Macri’s double.
South Point got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Jarred Perdue homered to left.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, Brian Cremeans walked, went to third on a two passed balls, Jared Waggoner walked and went to second on a passed ball, and Josh Morrison lofted a sacrifice fly.
An error on the relay throw allowed the second run to score.
In the Panthers half of the inning, Bell doubled to start the rally and scored on a hit by Macri.
Two passed balls sent Macri to third where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Clark.
Chesapeake had 11 hits with Bell and Macri each going 2-4.
