Jessica Mann, JoAnn Harmon, and Chrisa Hayes teamed up to pitched a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday as the Fairland Lady Dragons beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 17-1 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The win not only improved Fairland’s record to 16-5, but left the Lady Dragons tied for first place in the OVC with Chesapeake. The two teams have identical 9-2 league records and will meet later this week to determine the conference champion.

"We got a chance to pitch several players and play everybody," Fairland coach Jim Bailey said. "We had nine hits by eight different people, so that was nice to see."

Coal Grove used four walks to score in the first, but Fairland came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Brooke Fisher reached on a fielder’s choice, moved up on a passed ball, and Harmon had an RBI single.

The Lady Dragons took the lead for good with two runs in the second.

Paula Daniel singled to start the inning, DeeAnna Meadows was safe on a fielder’s choice, Maggie Staggs walked to load the bases, and a passed ball scored Daniel with the go-ahead run.

A double steal got the second run home for a 3-1 lead.

"It was senior night and we got a slow start, but then we got going," Bailey said.

Fairland erupted for seven runs in the third and fourth innings.

Four hits and two errors produced seven runs in the third. Four walks, two hits, and two errors scored the second set of seven runs in the fourth.

Fairland is now 16-5 overall and 9-2 in the OVC.

Seniors for the Lady Dragons are DeeAnna Meadows, Maggie Staggs, Paula Daniel, April Ward, and JoAnn Harmon.

"You get awful close with kids over four years, and these are all good kids, not just good players," said Bailey.
