Portsmouth – There’s nothing like a sectional championship game to make a pitcher feel better. Feeling sick entering Wednesday’s Division II sectional title game, Chesapeake’s Kim Frye got well on her pitching as the Lady Panthers beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 4-3.

Frye struck out nine, walked four, and gave up five hits as Chesapeake, 17-6, advanced to the district tournament Tuesday against Portsmouth West at Waverly.

All three Portsmouth runs were unearned.

"Kim hasn’t felt well, but she came to play and did a great job. And we got hits when we needed," Panthers coach Robb Morrison said.

The Lady Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

With two outs, Jessica Rice singled, Frye walked, and Jessica Hall had an RBI single.

Portsmouth came back to score twice in the bottom of the inning and take the lead.

Emily Esham reached on a one-out error and scored on a double by Michelle Horner. Kendra Hull followed with a run-scoring single to center.

Chesapeake then scored three times in the top of the fifth.

Kristen Huff singled to start the inning and Jessica Rice double to put runners at second and third. Frye was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Megan Felts came on to relieve and got a strikeout, but Shelli White singled in the tying run, Kristen Thacker walked to force in the go-ahead run, and a walk to Tiffany Porter made it 4-2.

The Trojans scored in their half of the inning.

Courtney Clifford walked, Esham singled, and a two-out error allowed the run to score.

Portsmouth finishes 19-3.
