West Portsmouth – It was just what everyone expected. The matchup between South Point pitcher Tara Layne and Portsmouth West’s Erica Brickey were expected to be locked in a pitcher’s duel, and they were. Brickey got the upper hand as the Lady Senators blanked the Lady Pointers 2-0 Wednesday in the Division II sectional tournament finals.

Brickey, who has more than 1,000 career strikeouts, had only seven against the Lady Pointers, but she walked just one and allowed five hits.

Layne struck out one, walked two, and permitted only five hits in taking the tough-luck loss.

West, 18-2, plays Chesapeake Tuesday in the district semifinals at Waverly.

South Point finishes the season 18-8.

After three scoreless innings, the Lady Senators broke through with a run in the fourth.

Katie Gunnoe led off with a double, took third on a fly out, and scored when Nikki Moore grounded out to short.

Gunnoe tripled to center to start the sixth inning. An overthrow to third in an attempt to get Gunnoe went into the dugout and allowed the run to score.

Gunnoe was 2-3 to lead West.

Nekka Mains, Whitney Morrison, Erica Griffith, Sarah Stevenson, and Layne all went 1-3 for the Pointers.
