Sometimes all it takes to save a life is a battery and a $5-15 piece of equipment. And in Lawrence County this month, you don’t even have to have the battery.

Project SAFE offers free smoke detectors for families across the State of Ohio. All you have to do is contact your local fire department and volunteers will not only give you this lifesaving piece of equipment. They will install one for you.

Most people don’t think about smoke when they are considering how to best protect their family from the dangers of a house fire. They worry about escape routes and flames.

But that might not be enough to save the lives of your spouse or children.

Smoke is one of the most deadly parts of a fire. There are hundreds of cases every year where a family might have been able to escape a house fire if they had only been able to get to an exit in time. They couldn’t reach safety because they were overcome by smoke.

A smoke detector won’t remove smoke from your home during a fire, but it will give you the warning you need to get your family out quickly. And those few extra minutes might be all you need.

If you do not already have smoke alarms in your home, call your local fire department and ask about Project SAFE. There are no excuses left; it’s convenient, easy and free – and could save your life.
