Waggoner turned in a strong performance Friday as he pitched a two-hitter to lead the South Point Pointers to a 6-0 shutout of the Northwest Mohawks to capture the Division II district championship.

"I pitched pretty good. I felt a lot stronger than Tuesday. I hadn’t pitched in a couple of weeks, so Tuesday I felt loose, and (Friday) I felt like I had more power in the my arm," said Waggoner.

"And our defense stepped it up. We had no errors and a lot of effort. They do their best behind me. And our offense has come through. We’ve scored a lot of runs the past two games."

Waggoner, who struck out eight and walked five against Northwest, allowed only two earned runs in the two district games. Waggoner gave up just four hits in a 6-2 win over Logan Elm on Tuesday.

South Point, 17-6, will play Steubenville at 5 p.m. Friday at Lancaster in the regional semifinals. The other game matches Washington Court House and Rayland Buckeye Local.

The winners meet at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"I can’t wait. This is the first time we’ve ever won the district. I can’t wait to go to the regionals and hopefully on to the state," said Waggoner.

Neither team scored in the first inning, but the Pointers pushed across a pair of runs in the second.

Jamie Douglas singled, went to second on a ground out, and Patrick Panell reached on a throwing error that scored Douglas and sent Panell to second.

Jared Perdue followed with a base hit to score Panell and it was 2-0. Shane Fuller had a two-out single to score Perdue.

The lead went to 4-0 in the fourth as the Pointers pushed across another run.

The Pointers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

B. J. Belville had a leadoff walk and Douglas doubled him to third. Shane Holsinger walked to load the bases, and Panell walked to force in a a run.

After a short fly ball for the first out, Justin Eaches hit a sacrifice fly to center as Douglas came home.
