Tammy L. Cade, 34, of Pedro, who is being treated at St. Mary’s Hospital, was driving a 1992 Saturn southbound on County Road 51, about a mile and a half off Etna-Waterloo Road in Decatur Township when she apparently drove off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment at about 7:48 p.m., Ohio Highway Patrol Lt. Jim Coleman said.

The only passenger in the vehicle, Teresa M. Massie, 32, of Pedro, did not survive the crash, Coleman said.

No other vehicles were involved, and the cause of the accident is not yet known, he added.

"The incident is still under investigation," Coleman said.

Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Services technicians, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies, the County Coroner’s Office and several local fire departments, as well as OHP troopers, responded to the accident.

"Mrs. Cade was air-lifted to St. Mary’s Hospital," Coleman said. "Neither of the people were ejected from the vehicle. The fire department had to extract them mechanically."
