Fourteen miles of County Road 1 top Lawrence County’s summer paving list.

"That will be a nice job there because that was last resurfaced in 1983," county engineer David Lynd said. "That’s about as long as you want to go between pavings."

In fact, Lynd paved the road during his first year as county engineer, so most projects are coming back around for their second run now, he said.

Shelly Company will pave the major roadway from Sheridan in Perry Township to the Chesapeake corporation limit near the overpass – estimated to cost about $700,000.

The County Road 1 paving also includes a 2.56-mile section of County Road 1A, or old U.S. 52, in Hamilton Township from the Scioto County line to U.S. 52.

Work will begin as soon as possible, Lynd said.

County commissioners awarded a nearly $1 million paving contract to Shelly last week.

The company bid $992,000 for the County Road 1 job and the resurfacing of portions of nine township roads.

The money comes from state Issue 2 grant money. Township trustees match a share of the grant funding for their road projects.

The township road paving will resurface 4.47 miles of roadways spread out over several townships.

"That will make us a good year," Lynd said about the paving.

Roads scheduled for summer resurfacing, in addition to County Road 1, include:

– Township Road 218, Tunnel Ridge Road, Elizabeth Township, 0.76 miles from the west end of the existing asphalt.

– Township Road 250, Sutton-Mt. Tabor Road, Fayette Township, from County Road 17 east 0.5 miles.

– Township Road 93 North, Lick Creek Road, Fayette Township, from County Road 58 south 0.34 miles.

– Township Road 1214, Brown Drive, Perry Township, from Township Road 111 to the dead end for 0.31 miles.

– Township Road 296, Poague Road, Perry Township, from Ohio 243 to the end for 0.39 miles.

– Township Road 158, Henson Hollow Road, Union Township, 0.2 miles from east end of existing asphalt.

– Township Road 88, Five Mile Creek Road, Union Township, from County Road 70 to Union Township line for 0.38 miles.

– Township Road 1363, Crestview Drive, Union Township, from County Road 123A to the dead end for 0.17 miles.

– Township Road 208, branch of Sugar Creek Road, Upper Township, 1.42 miles from Ohio 141 to the dead end.
