Earlier this week, you probably read our commentary on the man who was beaten to death – in front of his children – because of a spat generated over a pickup hockey game between a group of children.
That was simply to point out the horror of such a brutal act.
This is to remind us all that it could easily happen here.
Sports is a big deal in Lawrence County. A lot of emotion is part of every football season – and at other times during the school year as well.
In fact, there are times when parents and spectators get out of hand – some criticizing the coach, while others are gunning for the referees.
We are a little more than a month away from the start of this year’s football season. And, like last year and the year before last and the year before that, stands across the region will be filled with fans who are dedicated to their schools.
There will be cheering and banners – and that is OK. No one is saying that you shouldn’t make sure your school spirit is loud.
Then, there will be those who do not exercise the restraint and respect for the fans or the players. Some will be dangerous and get carried away.
It is up to all of us to make sure that these people are not allowed to get out of hand. If they do anything that could be considered dangerous or otherwise threatening, it is up to us to stop them – or to seek out an authority who can.
That brutal attack in Massachusetts has destroyed two families – and scarred a town. No community should have to endure the pain of such a senseless and horrible loss of control over something that is – in the great scheme of things – only a trivial matter.
Preventing a similar story from happening here will take all the adults in this county deciding that they will not tolerate such irresponsible behavior, and making sure it gets stopped before it gets out of hand.
That is the only way to protect our families.
