Lawrence County Genealogical Society members are asking county residents to share a little bit more of their families’ histories as part of the state’s 200th birthday celebration.
The society first published a book in 1990 as an effort to provide residents with an idea of what has happened in the county in past years to influence the lifestyles of today.
Included in the first volume were stories of events, families and businesses as written by those who were involved.
Now, the society wants to do a second edition, which will be available by December 2002.
"We will be printing another history book," said Trena Henderson, society president."What we’ve found is that a lot of people were left out in the first book. They just weren’t able to get their stories in on time. Our goal is to help celebrate the 200th birthday of Ohio and in doing so, we want people to give us their individual history of the county."
She said the book will be a continuation of the first volume and is intended to provide interested individuals with information about residents, former residents and people with roots in Lawrence County.
Individuals who have family members involved in establishing the county are encouraged to submit a story, Mrs. Henderson said.
She said the society would also like to have stories of family members involved in the Civil War as well.
"We feel this book is a good source of information about the beginnings and happenings of the county that have affected, in any way, where we live today," she said. "We are encouraging people to submit new stories about their family history and not repeat those from the previous book. They can add to a story that was in the previous book if they wish."
Mrs. Henderson said the society hopes to focus on the formation of churches, clubs and various other kinds of organizations.
Individuals interested in providing the society with a story are permitted to write 500 words for free and are may include a picture for publication, she said.
The deadline for submitting a story is Jan. 1, 2002. It can be sent to the Lawrence County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1035, Proctorville, Ohio 45669.
