Area law enforcement and emergency agencies enjoyed an uneventful weekend as the county celebrated Labor Day.

"Everything was quiet this weekend," said Don Mootz, Lawrence County 911 coordinator.

Officials from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department said that nothing unusual happened during the holiday.

Complaints of domestic violence, thefts and property damages were mostly the calls that filtered through the office, dispatchers said.

Ohio Highway Patrol officials said motorists using county roadways over the weekend traveled safely and responsibly.

"There were no fatal crashes in the county this year," said OHP Lt. Carl Roark, reflecting back on the holiday weekend. "Statewide, though, there were 12 fatal crashes over the weekend."

He said the Ironton post also caught fewer people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"Our DUI arrests were low," Roark said. "It appears the message got out and people were drinking responsibly."

The OHP’s increased vigilence did catch one criminal, however. Troopers recovered one stolen vehicle from Huntington, W.Va., he said.

"We were doing a routine traffic stop when we recovered a stolen vehicle," Roark said. "The trooper routinely ran the registration number of the car which revealed the car to be stolen from Huntington."

He said two arrests were made in connection to the illegal possession of drugs.

"We also had a felony arrest for possession of crack cocaine in addition to an arrest for marijuana possession. Overall, we feel we had a successful holiday weekend for travel safety."HF
